Goodbye William Shakespeare class!

Here's the last thing I did as your teacher: take a lovely photograph of a lovely bunch of children.  It's been great being your teacher this year and this photograph will be a wonderful way of remembering you!
Have a great summer and good luck for year 6!

Remember: take care, be good, read a book!

Fishponds Shack.By Paige

Splintered glass lay amidst a stack of branches. The roof is smothered with dead ivy.Paint begins to blister.Once where there were bricks there is only rubble. The main thing standing is a set of swing doors,on which the padlock is rusted.A yellow triangle is the sign of danger, stuck on the flaked paint.Loose tiles prepare to drop.Directly infront is an overgrown bush which is used as a dump, stinging nettles hide treacherously in the long waving grass. On the doors rotten, mouldy wood looks as though it is going to crumble and rot away.

Diagram of the chest

This is the diagram of the chest we looked at on Wednesday.  How many of the numbered parts can you name?  Why not use this picture to explain to your parents or a brother or sister the journey air takes from being all around us into your lungs!

Leave a comment with your thoughts and answers.

Photos from Tuesday

Here are some photos from our road safety walk on Tuesday.  Have a look and see if you can tell where they were taken!  Have a think about one or two of the questions and leave a comment with your replies.

1) Why do you think the kerb has been dropped here?
2) Why do you have to be careful of dropped kerbs if you walking (or running) along the pavement?

 3) What do the two rows of broken lines mean?

4) Why do we have the same lines as these outside the entrance to the school?

5) You can't see what's on these two signs but what could be on them?  Think about the shapes of the signs - there are lots of possibilities!

6) What can you tell me about the two signs you can see in this picture?

Another recount of our trip to City Academy Bristol

Here's Najmo's recount of our trip to City Academy.  I'm sure she'd love to read your comments.  Just click the comments link below and write something constructive!

                        City Academy
You won’t believe the day I had at city Academy!

My best lesson of the day was when we did ict because we did our own blog and we wrote about what we did and how much fun we had.

My second favourite lesson was P.E because when we did the vertical jump I went to 1.6 metres? I was really proud about that. We also did a tally chart then worked out our results. Therefore we also worked out who was then fastest.

In addition, city academy is a good school because there’s around 90% students that have great qualifications. City academy students take care of others around them too. All the teachers teach the children fantastic things like science, ict and maths.
I really enjoyed doing all the activities and dissecting a lamb’s heart. We learned lots of science. As well as we learned lots of things about city academy and we wrote it in our blog. Maybe in the future you might go to city academy and do all the things I did.

Recounts of our day at City Academy Bristol

My day in City Academy by Tahmenah

Can I tell you all about my day in City Academy? If so let me tell you all about it.

So First, we went in a hall which was a sports hall. And we’ve did P.E in there but it was really easy to be honest. So we did lots of stuff like handball toss and stomp long jump. And we did those stuff because we want to be fit. So when we did some we had a break.

So After, P.E we had a short break and a guy came and he was a special footballer. Everyone got his autograph and the P.E lesson was over.

After that, we did science and we had to see a lamb heart and I said “YUCK” but it was disgusting. We had to wear goggles and gloves we wore them because it needs to protect our eyes and to keep our hands clean. Then we used a scalpel to cut the heart and it is used for cutting.

Did you know there facilities are so wow because they have good laptops and brilliant iPods. And they have a massive hall and something they have we don’t have.

Then, it was the end of the day and I really enjoyed the whole day because it was so fun and I really look forward going back.

What shall we call our new tracking sheet?

In our class assembly today there were a lot of positive comments from you about the new tracking sheet.  I'm really pleased you all seem to like this new way of recording learning behaviour in class.

So, the question is: what should we call it?  Leave a comment with your ideas.

Message in a bottle, part two

Here's Paige's message in a bottle from Ben Gunn

Dear receiver
Me name is Billy, Billy Gunn, I am stuck on an island called Treasure Island. Used to be a pirate. Yep I was first mate on Cap’n Flint’s ship. (You may of ‘eard of ‘im!) Anyway as you near the island the sea will become a desert. Not a bird will call, not a fish will jump. The reason for this will be clear when you see the starved sailors hanging in nets dangling from a cliff. (Caused by Cap’n Flint.)

Living on this island is torture especially if you’ve been ‘ere 2 WHOLE  YEARS! All I can eat is
coconuts and all I can drink is coconut milk. That darned Flint! It is all his fault!

How I wish I could be back home. I should have never become a pirate, I miss lamb and pork chops, plus all my friends. Also I miss playing tag even though I am old an’ I want to change me clothes!

If ya save me ya reward ‘ll be grand! I promise! OH FOR PETES SAKE SAVE ME!!!

The Mystery Of Wembley Stadium

Here's a story Nat wrote at home, inspired by The London Eye Mystery by Siobhan Dowd.  Please leave a comment!

The Wembley Stadium Mystery

I woke on a awkward Saturday morning
hopping that our oncoming trip to the greatest showdown stadium in the world Wembley Stadium was going to go fine.
Unfortunately, one of us won't return and smile with their lime scale free teeth.
We gathered round the table and we were just staring at the Coco Pops cereal box and we argued for it.
Then, I beamed like I was announcing the winner of the World Cup competition.
Another argument shattered hopes of arriving at Wembley Stadium on time and it was a very silly thing to do it was of course to clean the disgusting toilet.
The idea of going to Wembley was unreservedly all my cousin Jermain 's very irritating idea. Don't question me why!
He was not scared of jumping from the highest ranked seat to the pitch which was
a tenth of a mile away.

I led Jermain to the Underground Station
with mum, dad sister Samantha and my youngest sibling John.
Jermain was a young man who never visited London just arriving from Jamaica and his dad would always work rather than chill-ax.
Jermain had hair the color of the sun and had skin which looked like a multi-coloured
disco ball.
But, he had eyes the colour of the ocean and had clothing what a millionaire would wear.
We all glimpsed at the steel, metal train tracks as our train came to a halt.
“Wow! This is Awesome!” the sophisticated Jermain hissed as he contemplated at the Underground logo.
When, we were on the train I saw a soporific, obliging, kaleidoscopic waitress.
She looked young and gorgeous because her hair was dark and she was named Zoey
an she was probably in her twenties and I can tell from her weight.
“What drink would you like!” Zoey exclaimed.
“All coke, please!” I replied calmly.
Soon, she left.

We eventually arrived at our destination
after we took a bus from Wembley station.
Next, we received a ticket from a computer
and brought it to the anti-cultured receptionist; he welcomed us in to the world's showdown stadium Wembley.
We got round the dram packed stadium then Samantha (which is my sister) shoved Jermain from the highest ranked seat and slid towards the pitch where groundsmen were cutting grass and then he damaged himself and Samantha ran to get a kidnapper she knew and his name was James from Blackpool.
Afterwards, he came to the damaged Jermain and took him away.
“Where are you, Jermain!” I screamed.
Then, Mum arrived with a disgraceful manner because her clothes got filthy.
“So.......Where's Jermain!” Mum questioned.
“No clue!” I answered
“Well, I'll ask Sammy if she knows anything about Jermain's vanishment! She you in a moment.”
Where's Jermain, Samantha!” Mum asked.
“I don't know! Ask John!”
John was with me getting filthy!” Mum suggested.
“TRUE or FALSE do you know where Jermain is!”
Samantha asked needing a proper answer.
“SANCTIMONIOUS !” Mum answered with confident manners.
“I'm soporific now and can I go home now!”
John moaned.
“OK!” Dad sighed.
A day later, I got a letter and it had my school logo and I knew that I was going to the muceum in Greenwich to round off our distinguished year we had in our school including the olympic torch pics which each school Councillor from each class get to lift the golden torch.
However, there was a letter the metropolitan police and when I told her there was a letter about it mum grabbed it off my hands in astonishment.
She completely started bawling because Jermain was idle.
“Jermain has died! He was a sanitary boy.”
mum cried.
“WHAT!” Jermain's dad bellowed.
“I will never see him smile again!”
I never saw his face smile
AGAIN
NEVER AGAIN!

Message in a bottle from Ben Gunn

When Jim Hawkins arrives on Treasure Island, he meets a strange man named Ben Gunn who was marooned there three years earlier by Captain Flint.  One way you could contact people if you were stranded on a desert island was to write a letter, put it in a bottle and throw the bottle into the sea.

Here's Mohamed's message in a bottle from Ben Gunn.

Dear sir

I am at the ISLAND. LIFE is very good on the Island. What I miss about home is that you  can do very fun stuff  but at the island  you have no one to talk to . I feel sad because CAPTIN Flint  left me . AND also I feel anxious about him. Why oh why did he  maroon me . HOW I wish   I was at Bristol with all the other people . He hid the treasure on the island and left me all alone and said get out of my ship . I AM at this boring island.

How to comment on our blog

Hi guys,

Here are some reminders about posting comments:

1) Always use your real first name (not a nick-name) but NEVER your surname.
2) Always use standard English and punctuate your sentences normally.
3) Aim to leave two stars (two things you really like about the post) and a wish (one way in which the post could be improved).
4) Always be kind!

Your friendly, neighbourhood Year Five teacher,
Mr F.

Treasure maps!

We made treasure maps on Tuesday.  Here are a couple of good examples from Anisa and Zahur.  Which geographical features can you see on these maps?  Both maps have Xs "marking the spot" (telling you where the treasure's buried).  Can you identify the grid reference for the treasure on each map?  What's your rule for remembering which way round grid reference co-ordinates go?

                                                                            Anisa

Make your pirate self!

On Tuesday afternoon, William Shakespeare class was invaded by the most unruly bunch of pirates sailing the high seas!  Do you know who these ruffians were?  Scoundrels and rascals the lot of them!  Leave a comment if you think you can identify any of this fearsome looking bunch:

Treasure Island characters Wanted posters

Here are wanted posters by Mahira and Ikran and Nat.  They tell you about two characters we meet at the beginning of Treasure Island : Black Dog and a mysterious blind beggar.  Have you seen either of these men?

                                                                     Mahira and Ikran

There's a clue in Nat's poster about where this story begins.  Can you tell?  Leave a comment if you know where the story begins and what the clue in the poster is.

                                                                              Natnael

Black Dog is a mysterious character we meet in episode one of Treasure Island.  While Billy Bones is staying at the Admiral Benbow Inn, Black Dog pays him a visit one night.  Here's Shugri's character description of Black Dog.

                                                             Black Dog

Black Dog is violent he had started a fight with Billy Bones. Black Dog has left over food in his black bushy beard. Unfortunately Black Dog has lost his index finger and middle finger. He is also very lanky (lanky means skinny) and tall.

Rumour has it that Black Dog  lost his 2 fingers because a shark bit them off. People say that Black Dog’s name ends with dog and some dogs are violent so that’s how he became violent. But we just don’t know if it is true or not.

How to construct Pie Charts (part one)

It would be useful for you to watch this short video on constructing pie charts at home.  Can you spot the two deliberate (ahem) mistakes I made in the video?  Don't forget to watch both parts.

Is the video clear?  Or, do you still have questions about constructing pie charts?  Leave me a comment and let me know.
